The South African government signed 27 power purchase agreements (PPAs) under the renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme. The PPAs represent 2.3GW of generation capacity and an investment of ZAR56bn (USD4.7bn), according to the Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe. Of the total, 12 PPAs are for solar schemes totalling 813MW. The majority of the investments will be in the Northern Cape with 15 wind, solar PV and concentrated solar power projects planned for the province, while four solar projects will be built in North West Province. ‘The localisation potential of these 27 new projects is substantial. Our estimate is that for the solar PV projects, around 2.8mn solar PV modules would be procured, 600 inverters and 385 transformers,’ said Radebe (PV Magazine). The capacity is expected to be connected to the grid over the next five years, said the minister.
